The Most Unprofessional Law Firm Experience I Have Ever Encountered

I cannot emphasize enough how disappointed I am with the service provided by Ogilvie LLP during the closing of our home purchase.

1. Lack of Communication and Last-Minute Scheduling
Our possession date was November 28, 2024. I reached out to the firm on November 18, 2024, but did not receive a response until Friday, November 22, 2024—giving us less than one business day to review the documents and sign everything by Monday, November 25, 2024. Expecting clients to rearrange their schedules at such short notice, especially when both my husband and I have full-time day jobs and part-time evening and weekend commitments, is completely unreasonable.

2. Unprofessional Signing Process
When we arrived at the Ogilvie reception floor at Stantec Tower, we were redirected to the ground floor lobby where we met with Adeel Malik, who was not the lawyer listed on the documents emailed to us. We were asked to sign our papers in a public space in the lobby, with a homeless individual circling us as we went through the biggest financial transaction of our lives.
As someone who works in the Stantec Tower, I even offered a safe, private space to sign the documents, but Adeel refused the offer. In retrospect, I should have insisted on moving to a more private space, as this level of exposure was entirely inappropriate.

3. Unacceptable Behavior During Signing
During the signing process, Adeel Malik displayed further unprofessional behavior. He took what appeared to be a personal phone call—without excusing himself—while looking directly at us. He answered the call using smart glasses, similar to Meta Ray-Bans, making the situation even more awkward and intrusive. I believe he may have taken another personal call during the meeting as well or the call was for an extended amount of time. I fully understand if someone needs to take an urgent call, but the least he could have done was excuse himself out of respect for his clients.

4. Overall Disregard for Professionalism
While I was aware of the flooding that affected the Ogilvie reception floor, which may have contributed to the lack of a proper waiting area, it does not excuse the lack of preparation, last-minute scheduling, public exposure of sensitive paperwork, or the unprofessional behavior demonstrated during our meeting.

I highly recommend avoiding Ogilvie LLP for any legal services. Our experience was beyond unacceptable, and I would not trust them with any future legal matters.

Thank you, Mr. Malik, I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a skilled and responsive real estate lawyer.

They were professional at all times with Ali providing sound legal advice and timely updates. I was kept abridged of any complications that needed further attention which I am confident saved me time, excess stress, and money.

While no Lawyer is cheap the rate charged was reasonable and provided good value for money, I can wholeheartedly recommend Ali if you need good work and good advice.

The firm itself is in a good location on Jasper Avenue in downtown Edmonton with lots of parking nearby. The offices were clean and upscale while the staff was friendly and responsive to questions.
