I contacted Ashley Barrett's company for my tax return as a new registered massage therapist. Ashley assured me that she had worked with other RMTs before and knew exactly what would be necessary to file an accurate return, but this was not what happened.

Instead I was given back an assessment that was HIGHLY inaccurate. According to her assessment, I owed more HST than I had collected and my income was reported as more than I had earned which affected the amount of income tax I owed. And on top of this she changed my address to an old address that I never gave her, which was just bizarre. Several colleagues told me it was absurd to owe as much as I did and I decided to contact Ashley about the issue.

Ashley's secretary denied the return being wrong, denied my request for a refund on what I paid for the return, and heavily insinuated that any inaccuracies on the return were due to the information I had provided. I'm new to my career, I've never done this before, so I figured there may be some truth to that but I still didn't feel great. So I contacted a new bookkeeper recommended to me by another colleague.

This second bookkeeper looked over my return and agreed with my colleagues that the file had been done incorrectly. After the refile, it turns out that Ashley's mistakes would have cost me an additional $4k. The biggest mistake she made was taking my employment income from a previous job, rolling that into my self-employment income, and then adding a random extra amount of money that I never earned! It made it seem as though I had earned way more than I had and collected more HST, resulting in incredibly high owed amounts for both income and HST.

Needless to say I'm disappointed. I wish Ashley had just told me in the beginning that she was not comfortable working with people in my profession so that I could have avoided this mess and found someone who knew what they were doing sooner. What an incredible waste of my time, my money, and my sanity.

I was fresh out of school, didn't know the first thing about doing my taxes (thus why I went to an accountant). They didn't help me figure out what forms I needed, didn't take 30 seconds to call me about obviously missing documents or even just ask overview questions about my year tax-wise to confirm they had everything. That negligence cost me $1500. When I called them in a total panic about it, they were condescending and offered zero support in figuring out what to do.

Frankly i am disappointed. Didn't follow basic instructions and filed taxes prior to all slips being submitted. Had to resubmit them. Have been getting letters ever since (10) from CRA since saying I owe more money.
