We lived in Victoria for 8 years as permanent residents and then dual citizens, and had the great luck to find Baker Tilly the first year we had to file in both US and Canada. I have been blown away every year by the professionalism and care that Andrea and her team have given to our complex tax situation. They also pulled out all the stops to help with our home sale in 2024. BT are probably are not the cheapest preparers, but they are worth every penny and more. Very pleased with the service and the personal contact from these wonderful folks.

First time using them. They were helpful, but they charged 2x what was estimated at the outset, which was already higher than I had paid anywhere. It included a 1k invoice for a one page form. They also billed for clarifying conversations which have been included in the cost of filing at other firms. There was no time when the accountant walks you through your filing and explains it, which has also been included at other firms I've used. Ultimately felt like I paid significantly more to get a lot less. Would not recommend based on my experience.

I had a terrible experience with this accounting firm. I asked them to do my US and Canadian taxes for 2021. These are the following issues that I had:

1. For 2021, they gave me an invoice nearly 3 times the amount we had talked. When I asked how this happened, they said that it took them some hours to get all the documents. They don't send a questionnaire and the process of collecting the forms was iterative. I prefer to give all is needed at once when I am told what is needed. I had never heard of accountants charging extra hourly for collecting the documents they need. Eventually, after going back and forth they revised to an amount that was still 2 times higher than the first estimate

2. I got a letter from the CRA for review of my Canadian taxes in Aug 2022. Right away I told them to respond by sending the required documents and they said they did. However in December 2022, I received another letter from the CRA saying that they did not receive anything and now I need to pay a very big amount. I called the accounting frim and they said we had sent it but CRA "chose to ignore it and this happens all the time". this time they did submit it but later it turned out they had not submitted the correct form for one of the items. For just submitting these forms, they gave me a big invoice (>$1000). With all these disappointing outcomes I got back to them and eventually they dropped this invoice.

3. I received a letter from the IRS for a review of my US taxes. This time, it turns out another form wasn't submitted to the IRS even though I had given the form to Baker Tilly Victoria at the time of filling the taxes.

For a company that charges a lot of money, their services is not good at all. I worked with Shawn Strandberg (Principal). He is a nice guy but as a company they seem to be overwhelmed and make mistakes frequently and they charge you for their own mistakes. Very greedy! You have to spend a lot of time going back and forth to move things forward and try to make things right.
